Xieng Khouang is a province in the east of Laos. The capital is Phonsavan. The province has approximately 262,200 inhabitants. The three highest mountains of Laos are in this province. With 2819 meters, the Phu Bia is the highest of them. North of this mountain, is the largest plain of Laos, the Xieng Khouang plateau. This plain lies on an altitude of 1200 meters. The most known attraction on this area, is the Plain of Jars. The Nam Ngum river has its source on these plains. Some hot water springs are in this province.

Xieng Khouang is home to the Phuan language and culture. Also, many hill tribes live here. Since the end of the war, large numbers of Vietnamese have settled in this area.
