The That Dam (the Black Stupa) is located in the centre of Vientiane, on the Chantha Khoumane road, not far from the Talat Sao (morning market) and the Wat Si Saket. It is an impressive and mysterious structure, and subject of a lot of legend and folklore. The old bricks of the stupa are overgrown with grass and moss. It is being said that the stupa once was completely covered with gold.
