Tha Khaek is the capital of Khammouane province. It is a town on the Mekong river, opposite of the Thai city Nakhon Phanom. The border crossing here is open to foreigners and several ferries connect the two cities. Some remains of an ancient city wall can be seen in the city. Tha Khaek is located in an area with impressive karst mountains and spectacular caves. The most notable of these caves is the Tham Khong Lor, with a length of over 6 kilometres. The Nam Hin Boun River runs through it.
