Since 1975, Phonsavan is the capital of the Xieng Khouang province, in central Laos. The city has about 60.000 inhabitant. During the civil war in Laos, a lot of fighting took place in this area. There is an airport just outside of this city. For travellers, the city is especially interesting for its vicinity to the mysterious Plain of Jars.

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is an organisation that is involved in clearing UXO (Unexploded ordnance). In Phonsavan they have made a small museum. It gives you an idea of how serious the problem of UXO is, and what MAG is doing to help solve the problem.
