Pakse - the beauty of the South
Video: Kongkeo
Pakse is a city in the Champasak province, in the south of Laos, and is the capital of the province. Pakse is situated on two rivers, the Mekong en the Se Don river. The city has some interesting Temples, built in the 20th century, and it has a relaxed atmosphere. Along the rivers, there are several restaurants where you can enjoy good food and beautiful scenery. An other way to enjoy the area, is by making a tour on the back of an elephant.

Pakse is surrounded by rice paddies and mountains. Pay a visit to the local markets, where the locals sell their agricultural products. This will give you a good insight in the way people live and work here.

The city of Pakse itself doesn't have many interesting sights, but it is a good starting point for excursions in the area around the city. For example you might want to visit the islands Don Khong and Don Khon, which lay in the Mekong river. In the very south, near the Cambodian border, are the spectacular Khon Phapheng waterfalls, the biggest one in Laos.

Also the Bolaven Plateau can be easily reached from Pakse. This is a big fertile plain, east of the city. Farmers on this plain are growing fruit, coffee, tea and several herbs. Located on the plain is also the temple complex of Wat Phou, which was put on the Unesco world heritage list in 2002. Wat Phou is certainly worth a visit.

Other places of interest include some beautiful waterfalls, like Tad Lo and Tad Fane. Here you can still observe the traditional way of life of the inhabitants.
