Pak Ou caves
About 25 kilometres from Luang Prabang, at the place where the rivers Nam Ou and Mekong meet, lies the village of Pak Ou. Here are the famous Pak Ou caves, two mysterious caves in a steep rock, that are filled with Buddha images of all kinds and sizes. It is estimated they are more than 5000.

Tham Ting, de lower cave, is easy to visit at daylight. This one is the most interesting of the two caves. If you wish to visit the upper cave, the Tham Phum, you should not forget to take a flashlight. The caves are very popular with tourists and are usually crowded.

To get here from Luang Prabang, you can hire a tuktuk to take you to Pak Ou village. From there, you cross the river by boat. But you can also take a boat directly from Luang Prabang to the Pak Ou caves. The slow boats that take passengers from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, pass by Pak Ou and some of them stop here for a while. Your visit to the Pak Ou caves can be combined with a visit to a weavers village. Also near here you can visit Ban Xang Hai, a village famous for its LaoLao distilleries.
