Nong Khiaw is a quiet little town in Luang Prabang province. It lies on the west bank of the Nam Ou river. Many travellers stay here only for a short time, and prefer to continue to Muang Ngoi Neua. Yet this place has some things to offer. Just cross the bridge to Ban Sop Houn, at the confluence of the Nam Ou and Nam Houn rivers. The surrounding landscape here is very beautiful. In the vicinity are some Hmong villages, some of them at easy walking distance. There are also some caves here, like the Tham Pha Thok. This cave can be reached on foot in less than an hour. The people of the village used to live in the cave during the second Indochina war. There is a waterfall near the cave.
