Muang La is a very picturesque village in Oudomxai province. It is located along the Route 2E, just 28 kilometers north-east of the provincial capital. Two rivers rush along this town: The Nam Phak and the smaller Nam La. The towns wooden and bamboo houses are set amindst lush green vegetation, making it a beautiful place. The ancient wat is well worth a visit, but the main attractions of Muang La are its hot springs.
The town makes for a good day trip from Oudomxai city (Muang Xai), but you might want to stay here overnight. Muang La is a small village and the choice of accommodation is limited. Muang La Resort (Tel: +856 21 243 446) is by far and away the best place to stay as it offers 5 villas housing 10 rooms set in beautiful gardens. The hotel also has a traditional Lao sauna, a massage 'sala' and a hot water spa filled with warm water from a nearby natural spring. You cannot just walk in here, you need to prebook a pricey package. Laos Travel Direct (Tel: +856 21 243 446) is a Vientiane-based tour operator, offering access to the Muang La Resort, and offering luxury guided tours in Laos.
For those who cannot afford this luxury, there is the small Phommatep Guesthouse (Tel: +856 5428 0089) which offers a basic level of accommodation. There are also some restaurants where you can taste the fish from the Nam Phak, which is said to be very delicious.
