Faces of Laos

Laos is the only country in the region, that has no access to sea. It is surrounded by Myanmar (Burma), China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Compared to its neighbouring countries, Laos has a low population density. A big majority of the people live in the rural areas and depends on agriculture. Laos is one of the poorest countries in the world.Faces of Laos

According to official numbers, no less than 68 different ethnic groups are living in Laos, with many different languages, religions and traditions. Other estimations mention that 100 or even 140 different groups. The best known of them are the Hmong, Lisu, Akha and the Mien. It is usually possible to visit their villages, and even to stay there overnight. The mountainous areas of Laos are still relatively untouched, although the forests are more and more under threat of logging companies.
The French rule of Laos is still visible here and there. Vientiane still has many old colonial buildings. But also you will see the typical French type of bread in many places.
The compete city of Luang Prabang, with all its Temples and other places of interest, is on the Unesco world heritage list. Those who love nature (or love to party) go to Vang Vieng, with its unique larst limestone mountains. In Xieng Khouang province, you can visit the mysterious Plain of Jars, with many big and small jars. Their origin and meaning is still unclear. In the south of Laos, is the Wat Phou, standing there for many centuries, or you could just do nothing in Si Phan Don (four thousand islands).
There are no intercontinental flights going into Laos, so you are likely so spend at least some days in Thailand or Vietnam. Many travellers combine their Thailand trip with an extra week of Laos, but Laos itself has enough to offer for a longer trip.
