The origin of the Hmong lies in the south of China. Descendants are spread over the north and the centre of Laos, the south of China, Vietnam and Thailand. Most of them live at altitudes over 1000 metres on mountains or hills. Polygamy is allowed. The traditional dress is simple, with black jackets and black trousers, accompanied with silver jewels. The women usually wear their hair tied in a large bun.

A large part of the population still uses iron instead of money in their trade. Iron is important for making knives and simple guns. De main agricultural products are rice, grain and opium.

During the secret war in Laos, the Hmong fought heavily for their existence, both against the Pathet Lao and the government, They were led by the Hmong General Vang Pao. Their resistance was organised mainly from the Xieng Khouang province. They received financial support by the CIA. After their defeat, many Hmong fled to neighbouring Thailand.
