Luang Prabang was the capital of Lane Xang, the land of of one thousand elephants. Meanwhile the elephant has become less numerous. About 15 kilometres outside
Luang Prabang, on the banks of the Nam Khan river, a project was started in 2003 to protect the Asian elephants in Laos and to free elephants in captivity from hard and dangerous logging work. From this 'Elephant Camp Ban Xieng Lom', many activities with elephants are organised. Sitting on the back of an elephant, you can visit some villages in the area.
