Champasak is a small and sleepy town on the river, with a few French colonial houses. The town is located in the province of the same name in the south of Laos. About 1400 years ago, it was a powerful state in this area. Later is became an outpost for the Angkor Khmer, from what is now Cambodia. They left us the temple of Wat Phou, one of the most important sights is Laos. It dates back from the 6th century and lies somewhat remote on a slope, with a beautiful view over the Mekong valley. To the north of the terrain there are some boulders shaped to resemble elephants and a crocodile. These were probably the site of an annual human sacrifice. The complex is located about 8 kilometres south west of the city and is an important tourist attraction. If you are looking for a place to sleep in the vicinity of Wat Phou, it is best to come to Champasak town.

In the narrow main street of Champasak, there is hardly any traffic, and the buffaloes and cows strolling around here seem very relaxed - even by Lao standards. Almost everything in Champasak is happening in the street that runs parallel to the river, on both sides of the fountain. The town is a good starting point for those wanting to visit Don Daeng.
