The Baci Ceremony is a leftover from the time before Buddhism. During this ceremony, 32 good spirits are symbolically tied around the wrist of the attendants, by means of a white cotton thread. The ceremony is often performed during weddings, when people are about to travel, of in case off illness. The ceremony usually takes place around a kind of tree, made of banana leaves and flowers. Some dishes of eggs or rice are placed under the tree. The person performing the ceremony, says a prayer and ties the threads around the wrists of the guests. The three knots in the tread symbolize prosperity, health and good luck. You should wear them for at least three days. During the ceremony, a traditional dance is performed, while traditional music is being played. It is sometimes possible for foreigners to attend such a ceremony. The evening performance of the Royal Theatre in Luang Prabang sometimes includes a (demonstration of the) Baci ceremony.
