Attapeu (sometimes also spelled Attopu or Attapu) is the capital of the province with the same name in the south of Laos. Its official name is Muang Samakhi Xai, but everyone refers to it as Attapeu. In the streets of Attapeu there is hardly any traffic and you won't find many tuk-tuks. But the town is easy to navigate and it's a good option to explore it on foot. Especially the early morning or the late afternoon are a good time for a walk around town.

Not far from this town, there is a choice of natural sights. For example, the Xe Pian National Protected Area and the Dong Ampham forest. In these so called 'Biodiversity areas' you have many options for short or long hikes.

There is a good road from Pakse to Attapeu, yet a trip on the bus may take six or seven hours. So if you can find some people travelling the same way, you might consider hiring your private vehicle.
